A tola is an old Indian unit of weight. It is exactly 11.6638 grams — that is 180 grains, or three-eighths of a troy ounce. It was the base unit of weight in British India, and it is still how gold is spoken about across UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, MP, Punjab.
A tola is a little heavier than the 10 grams that newspapers quote — about 17% heavier. So a tola always costs more than the “per 10 gram” rate you hear on the news. Both numbers can be right at the same time.
The shop, though, will weigh your jewellery in grams — that is what the scale and the bill use. Tola is how people talk; grams is how people are charged. So ask for the weight in grams, and check it against today’s per-gram rate.
Some price lists shorten the tola to 11.66 grams. It looks like nothing. At today’s 22K rate those missing 0.0038 grams are worth ₹49.38 on every tola — and more on a ten-tola bar. We use the full 11.6638038 grams.
